Bookmark Reading
WEBSITE UI DESIGN
Designing a modular, accessible and user-friendly website for Bookmark Reading, a tech-led charity supporting children’s literacy.
Bookmark Reading is a charity working to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. They partner with schools to deliver one-to-one reading support, grants and literacy resources, supported by a growing network of volunteers and partners.
Working as a designer for ethical agency Kind, my role was as UI designer for this project.
The previous website was outdated, confusing, hard to navigate and overly text-heavy, with a lot of repetition. It left users frustrated and key information buried. They needed a new site that was clean, readable and accessible to all, while showcasing its mission and impact in a more engaging and structured way, with clear user journeys, a creative brand expansion, and an extensive Help Centre tailored to real user needs.
The main aim of this project was to create a user-friendly, accessible website with clear user journeys for different key audiences. We needed to present the information in a structured, engaging and digestible format using flexible, modular templates. It was also important to elevate the brand visually whilst remaining aligned with the existing brand identity.
My role in this project taken on by ethical agency Kind, was being responsible for the design process, from early-stage wireframes through to responsive UI design and handover. I joined the user needs session and worked from the proposed information architecture to shape the structure and flow of the site.
I created a modular design system that supported the different user journeys and content needs. The site was designed to be flexible and scalable, enabling Bookmark to update pages consistently while accommodating new content and campaigns in future.
I also expanded on the existing Bookmark brand by introducing new brand assets and styles to their existing brand to create a friendly and professional look.
A standout feature of the project was the custom Help Centre. We designed an intuitive, content-rich support hub featuring smart search, categories, tags, FAQs, and user-type filtering. The User Experience of the Help Centre was crucial, and we created a human-centred solution that ensured users could quickly find answers relevant to their needs.
The final result is a friendly, clear and accessible website that reflects Bookmark Reading’s mission and personality while supporting their ambitious growth. The new website helps users navigate with ease, showcases their impact through strong imagery and stories, and reduces friction across key touchpoints. With a user-friendly & informative Help Centre and a consistent, flexible design system, Bookmark now has a digital home that’s set up to support their future and help more children change their life stories through reading.
